Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

Gas pumps in a row

What’s the difference between premium and regular gas? You’re not the only Huntington driver that has asked themselves this question. Both are available at your gas station, but doing right by your car means you should know a little bit about these types of gas. The service center at Land Rover Charleston covers premium vs. regular gas below!

Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

Both premium and regular gas are derived from crude oil, a process that produces a combustible substance you can use to fuel your vehicle. The difference between premium and regular gas is octane level. Premium gas has an octane level of 90 or above, which helps keep your engine cleaner.  Regular gas, on the other hand, is sufficient for many Parkersburg drivers. Its octane rating maxes out at 87. This level indicates that gasoline combats inappropriate fuel combustion.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: What to Consider

So, what else distinguishes premium and regular gas, and which should you choose for your vehicle? Here are some more facts about the difference between premium and regular gas:

  • Octane Rating: The higher your vehicle’s octane rating, the less chance your engine will knock or suffer from “pre-ignition.”
  • Engine Suitability: Regular gas works best with engines that have low compression ratios since it burns gas faster. Engines with high compression ratios use premium gas.
  • Price: This is one major difference that many Wheeling are familiar with: the price. Premium gas gets up to 40 cents more than regular gas, which can add up!

So, how do you decide which is right for you? Keep these facts in mind:

  • If your car doesn’t require premium gas, adding it doesn’t improve its performance.
  • If you have a new Land Rover vehicle that requires premium gas, using regular gas won’t hurt the vehicle in most cases. If you hear a knocking sound when using regular gas, switch back to premium.
  • Vehicles that use turbochargers could require premium gas.
