Difference Between Used vs. Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Grill
Financing pre-owned vehicles have become a very popular option for many of our customers who are looking to upgrade vehicles but trying to save money as well. But when visiting our Morgantown-area dealership, many of our customers ask us what is the difference between used and certified pre-owned vehicles is. Both are sold at our Charleston dealership, and although they might seem the same, they’re not.  Although both vehicles have previously been driven, they go through different levels of inspection and requirements. This makes a significant difference during the car-shopping process for our Wheeling-area customers. Use this guide to further understand the difference between CPO vs. used. Also, if you’re looking to drive home in a used car, reach out to our finance center to see what deals and specials are available to you today!

Why Finance a Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle

Some people may be turned off at the idea of financing a used vehicle because they might see it as driving someone else’s miles and vehicle treatment. But we don’t just put the CPO stamp on any vehicle. When a customer asks us, what is the difference between used and certified pre-owned, we explain that CPO requirements for Land Rover vehicles include:

  • Less than 60,000 miles
  • Less than 5 years old
  • A rigorous 165 point inspection
  • And More!

All of these requirements make sure that your vehicle is in the best shape and it can ride on for many more miles to come. That’s the difference between CPO and used vehicles.

Why Finance a Used Vehicle

Used cars are significantly different from CPO vehicles, but that doesn’t mean you’re driving a lesser vehicle. Even though you’re paying a lot less because used vehicles are priced lower than CPO vehicles, you’re still getting a vehicle that can more than handle your daily life. Being that most cars can drive well past 100,000 miles. Here are some extra steps and tips we take at our Wheeling-area dealership:

  • Although OEMs don’t require that standard used cars to be inspected before sale, Land Rover Charleston wants to make sure our customers get the highest value for their dollar. We hand-pick our used models. That being said, you should navigate a private sale with extra caution. Private sellers don’t have the reputation of a well-established dealership.
  • You should discuss any vehicle issues that you notice — either with the dealership or private seller. If you plan to purchase the car, even though it has a few problems, that’s 100% your choice — just make sure you factor money for the repairs into your shopping budget.
  • With proper care and maintenance, some vehicles can last upwards of 200,000 miles. High-mileage used cars aren’t always bad options, especially if you’re on a strict budget.
